This is my new welcome sign, although it is too heavy to hang, so it's more of a welcome stand. I made it yesterday, using a terracotta base, tile shards, glass beads, some Mexican clay beads, and one Oaxacan carved cat. It took a little over 5 hours to make. I love mosaic because you don't have to fire, saw, solder, or condition anything. There is much breakage involved though, so that's always fun.

AWESOME!!! Great use of colors, I showed it to my roomate, we have been talking about doing a mosaic project soon, that gave us some color inspiration.
Totally awesome! I love it!
I want one!
Hey Lara - when you get your new place I'll make you one as a housewarming gift...
The colors were kinda tough b/c I wanted to use traditional Mexican colors, b/c I'm doing my back courtyard like Frida Kahlo's in Mexico City... but I also wanted to have it be a bit whimsical, so I threw in some dichroic glass pieces and added the cat. It seemed too over the top but then that blue grout really brought it all together... it's so much fun to do...
You need to put a candle or some flame source out there. Self inflicted damage loves aloe !
That's not aloe, it's my friend Bob. Luckily he doesn't read my blog.
cynthia!!! i want one. i love moasic/tiling. we did that with an old table here at work. nice way to spend an evening.
